Let’s Connect: SFHEF Spotlight

I have the honor of sitting on the board of South Florida Health Executive Forum (SFHEF), as Networking-Chair Elect. I have been an active member of SFHEF, the local chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), since undergraduate school. I still remember the first meeting I attended—a networking event held at Don Shula’s Steakhouse in Miami Lakes. I remember driving to the location and being extremely nervous. When I walked through the doors I felt like a deer caught in headlights. I didn’t know anyone and felt intimidated, until I bumped into my Health Service Administration professor. She began introducing me to various administrators from hospitals, insurance companies, and rehab facilities to name a few. Everyone was very professional and courteous. My professor then said, “Ok, now it is time for you to go network”. After she left me alone, I was instantly approached by numerous people who were truly interested in getting to know me. Some of these people were individuals who held very high positions within their company. Since I was still in undergrad, I had a lot of questions to ask and comprehend. Most importantly, I wanted to understand how to apply what I was learning at school to their particular role and obtain firsthand knowledge. Needless to say, I found every moment extremely beneficial.
After graduating from undergrad, I obtained a job managing a very busy and prominent dermatology practice. I continued to be active with SFHEF by attending educational and networking events. During graduate school, I was approached by one of my professors who sat on the SFHEF Board to consider holding a future board position. I hesitated because I wanted to make sure I could serve a board position to the fullest capacity. I made a personal commitment to attend every event that SFHEF held that year in order to familiarize myself with the organization. Simultaneously, I also decided to explore other employment opportunities. Through SFHEF events, I consulted with some of the board members for advice on the best way to efficiently accomplish this goal and received kind, attentive feedback. At a later time, I was notified by one of the board members of a Physician Group that was looking for a Practice Manager. The board member forwarded the group my resume—I met with the owners of the practice the next day—and soon after, I was hired. Today I am the Practice Manager of South Miami CritiCare, Inc. We currently hold contracts with Baptist Health of South Florida and staff the physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners at three of their six Emergency Departments.
I owe my position with South Miami CritiCare, Inc. to the relationships I built with the members of SFHEF. I am a true testament of one of the benefits of becoming involved with SFHEF. The benefits I have obtained from the Forum are two-fold: 1) exposure to very informative and rewarding education sessions with top-notch panelists from every facet of healthcare and 2) personal development of my professional skills. Now, I am giving back to the SFHEF/ACHE by sitting on the board and strategically planning networking events for our great membership. My goal is to encourage students and non-members to participate and attend our events. The benefits are many, and the experience is unmatched. So take my advice: attend our meetings and participate, learn, grow and evolve with the SFHEF. You won’t regret it!
