The Jewels of the Caribbean

Publishing a monthly newspaper is a bit like being a hamster on a wheel, there isn’t a beginning and when you finish one loop (edition) it’s time to start on the next. Don’t get me wrong, Carol and I love what we do, but sometimes we just look at each other and realize — hey, we need a break.
So a couple of weeks ago, I packed my Speedo (just kidding) and Carol packed her cover-up (not kidding) and we set sail on the Regal Princess for one week in the Eastern Caribbean with my sister-in-law Bobbie and her husband Bob. Now Bob and Bobbie cruise A LOT (actually I think they clock more nautical miles than land miles) and sometimes visit the same ports several times a year. And Grand Champion shopper that Bobbie is, she’s made some “extremely” close retail friends.
So on our stop in St. Maarten, we visited their favorite jewelry store where we were introduced to “R” their favorite jewelry genius. Now “R” is not only charming, low key and fun, but he knows when to take out “the good stuff” which is completely unaffordable, but so much fun to try on! But after a while, even he had to get serious, I mean, he does run a business and “R” brought out 2 rings that he was sure Bobbie and Carol would like … and it was as they say, “love at first sight.” And so began the nitty-gritty of negotiation — Charles style. But allow me to digress a moment. I’m sure none of you would be surprised to hear that I was wearing my newest “smart watch” which is like having a computer on your wrist (thank you Best Buy Open Box) and from the moment we entered his store, R’s eyes had been glued to my watch. I even let him try it on, and once more I witnessed a case of love at first sight!
Let’s just say that in the end, Bobbie and Carol left with new rings, I left with a bare wrist, but with what we all agreed was an excellent deal for everyone. Back at sea, our cruise continued, we played a lot of Canasta, Carol read a lot of books, and I even paid frequent visits to the gym. (Of course, these visits were necessitated by the fact you HAD to walk through the gym to get to our favorite deck chairs.) And all came home, relaxed, happy and bejeweled. (Albeit watch less!) But don’t be too concerned, the very best part of my cruise was the realization that I now had a very excellent reason to hurry home to Best Buy.
