“You know you’re getting old when you get that one candle on the cake. It’s like, “See if you can blow this out.” - Jerry Seinfeld

And that’s how the month of February started in the Felix house —with my simple little family birthday dinner. But things never seem to go completely right when it comes to our house … not really wrong … but far, really far, from right. Remember the character Kramer from “Seinfeld?” How he was never really wrong in what he did – just a bit left of normal. Well, I think I married the female version.

First there was her explanation why my birthday dinner wasn’t a surprise. Carol’s answer was because she was making lasagna. (And she was completely serious.) I never realized you can’t have a surprise party if you serve lasagna.  Then there was her explanation as to why everyone had to be here by 4:30. She was making my favorite hors d’ oeuvre Pigs N Blankets and if everyone came later they wouldn’t have time to eat them. Again, none of us knew baby hotdogs wrapped in dough came with a time limit.

Then there was my birthday cake, or should I say cupcake, debacle. In lieu of a cake, Carol decided to order two dozen assorted cupcakes for my celebration. Very efficiently, she took care of dinner prep in the morning including picking up the cupcakes. Well, about 1 p.m. she realized salad really was better with some type of lettuce (another shopping list omission) and ran out to the store. Well, let’s just say in the 10 minutes between her leaving and my arriving home —Gabby had a very happy birthday! Yes, with the exception of 2 cupcakes, Gabby had a feast, wrappers and all. And that’s when I knew what my real birthday present would be … about 12 straight hours of gastrointestinal disturbances too numerous to mention.

Needless to say, Gabby’s new nickname is Vesuvius, all future cupcakes will be kept under lock and key, and Carol does have a heart … she spent the night on the screen porch with Gabby and I got to sleep in my comfy bed! Happy Birthday to me.
