The Big 49 — Déjà vu … All Over Again

Like the great Yogi Berra (from whom I’ve stolen in part the title), once again Carol and I are celebrating a pretty monumental anniversary — 49 years. Some years have flown by while other years (like 2020 – the year of COVID) have been a bit more like rowing in a wave pool.
In retrospect between the specter of COVID itself and quarantining the early part of the year, March, April and May seemed to go by quickly. Perhaps it was the all-consuming tasks of scrounging for hand sanitizers and toilet paper, ensuring remotely that Carol’s Dad in Assisted Living was doing okay, or making sure our friends and clients in the healthcare community were staying well that occupied us.
But I think as the summer descended and the reality that this was not going to be just a few months of isolation, we both began to feel the pressure. And (I think) began to realize more and more how lucky we were to be celebrating 49 years with a best friend and business partner who has never thought giving 100 percent was too much to ask. Taking on 50 percent of the household chores or other responsibilities just has never been the way we’ve lived. Somedays I’m definitely a one-percenter and Carol’s putting in 99 percent; while tomorrow she might be in the midst of a good book she WILL NOT put down and it’s up to me to handle things 100 percent.
And then there’s Gabby, our wonderful golden doodle, who at 14 ½ years, remains our touchstone. Visibly frailer and completely deaf with visible cataracts, she rules our roost and has loved every minute of this bizarre year. Having both mom and dad at home every day, she barks out our lunch and dinner bell and brazenly announces (no later than 6:30 p.m.) when it’s time for us to get into bed so she can too.
But back to our anniversary. Although the renovation on our damaged kitchen has yet to start, there are certain parts of our aging house we can’t delay fixing … aka our leaky toilet. So, much like we did about 11 years ago, once again Carol (the practical one in this marriage) says we’re gifting ourselves with a new toilet for our anniversary. Needless to say, I’m really “bowled” over.
