Miami Dade College Simulation Hospital Center for Learning, Innovation and Simulation Innovation Meets Opportunity

At the Center for Learning, Innovation and Simulation, we integrate simulation as an innovative teaching methodology that supports learning in a risk-free environment and evaluates performance. Simulation in Healthcare promotes student involvement in the clinical scenario and therefore builds leadership and critical thinking skills.

The Simulation space is designed to mirror a real hospital with an ambulance, 2 labor and delivery rooms; 8 medical/surgical rooms, 2 pediatric rooms, 9 debriefing rooms, an operating room suite, 10 examination rooms, home health apartment, control rooms and standardized patient area.
To add realism to the clinical experience, the students interact with 17 high fidelity human patient simulators, capable of running over 120 clinical scenarios. The simulated ambulance mimics the road conditions while students practice skills such as intubation, starting an IV and monitoring the cardiac rhythm. In addition, there is a virtual reality space where students study 3 D models and human organs through the VR headsets.
Each simulation room is equipped with cameras for recording and debriefing. Two-way mirrors allow instructors to observe the evolving clinical scenario in real time. This immersive learning environment helps students learn procedures through experience in a safe environment, ultimately reducing errors and elevating the quality of care.
The equipment is real, from hospital beds by Hill-Rom to medication dispensing systems by Omnicell.
The Simulation Hospital opened its doors in August, 2019 and follows closely the best standards of practice and recommendations by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH).
What is the value of a Simulation Hospital in our Community?
• Exposes students to patient conditions that are difficult to experience in clinical practice hours at the hospital (ex. cardiac arrest)
• Evaluates students with standardized testing tools
• Provides learners with deliberate practice followed by formative feedback that leads to performance improvement
• Assists with inter-professional team building exercises
• Venue for community and corporate partnerships
What better way to learn in a safe environment than in a simulated setting where mistakes are learning opportunities without ever putting a patient at risk.
Through experiential learning, students live the clinical situation, memories are built and knowledge reinforced. This is how the Simulation Hospital contributes to the community by improving the quality of healthcare delivered.
