Chuck Cleaver, CPA, MBA, FHFMA
Assistant Vice President of Finance
Martin Memorial Health Systems

In retrospect, health care finance was somewhat less complex when Chuck Cleaver started working at Martin Memorial Health Systems in 1984 than it is today.

“At the time, billing and reimbursing seemed complicated,” said Cleaver, now assistant vice president of finance for Martin Memorial. “But looking back it seems so much simpler than it is today.”
There are plenty of financial challenges facing health care providers today, but Cleaver sees a chance for the business community to make a difference.

“There is going to be a lot of opportunity for business people to figure out how community hospitals can sustain themselves under health care reform,” he said.

Cleaver is playing a key role in helping Martin Memorial do just that. The health system is implementing a new electronic medical record system, as well as IT upgrades for its business and human resources functions.

At the same time, Martin Memorial is planning to build a new 82-bed hospital in the west Port St. Lucie development of Tradition.

“One of the interesting challenges of my job is working on the numerous financings done throughout the health system, working with investment bankers and loan officers,” he said. “The Tradition hospital bond issue will be the largest yet done at Martin Memorial.

Carol Plato Nicosia, CHFP, CPAM, MBA
Administrative Director of Corporate Business Services
Martin Memorial Health Systems

Carol Plato Nicosia was introduced to health care as a teen, when she volunteered at a hospital. That experience propelled her to pursue a career in the business side of health care, a path she has followed for three decades.

Today, as administrative director of corporate business services for Martin Memorial, Plato Nicosia is responsible for revenue cycle, including registration and admitting, billing and collection, and managed care contracting.

Those can be formidable endeavors, given the current health care landscape.

“Our goal is to try to make the patient financial experience as pleasant as possible, but it isn’t an easy task,” Plato Nicosia said. “The biggest challenge for me is to help patients to the best of my ability while keeping the hospital financially viable. We try to educate and help patients through the maze of insurance and out-of-pocket expense.”

On the other side of the equation, Plato Nicosia and her team must keep up with government regulations pertaining to Medicare and Medicaid, as well as complicated authorization requirements and changes from private insurance companies.

Despite the challenges, Plato Nicosia enjoys her work.

“The business of health care is in constant change,” she said. “Anyone interested in entering this field will find it rewarding.”
