Broward Partnership for Eldercare by Donna Schreier, Senior Network Specialist

Broward Partnership for Eldercare is a contractual position between the North Broward Hospital District Employee Assistance Program and the Area Agency on Aging of Broward County.

This wonderful partnership has been in existence since 1993 and has served the needs of countless hospital employees. In essence, it is an eldercare benefit for those with relatives sixty years and older. With the everyday stress of work, many employees have found great relief in knowing that assistance is readily available to help make their home life more manageable.

The program is facilitated by a senior network specialist with an extensive hospital and geriatric background. In addition to providing assistance in Florida, the program is able to assist those with loved ones in other states. Some of the services include: Meals on Wheels, transportation, assisted living, home health care and nursing home placement. Every employee and respective family member is eligible to call upon the senior network specialist at any time. In addition to a weekly information table in the four hospitalsí cafeterias, help can also be accessed through a one on one consultation, by phone or in person.

A bi-monthly caregiver support group has proven to be very successful in bringing those together with similar problems. It is held in comfortable surroundings and always based on trust and confidentiality. Lasting friendships have been formed among those who have attended. It can be comforting to know that others share the same concerns as you. Group members can also learn from one another by hearing each othersí experience. Some have stated that they have received invaluable advice from the group.

The popular Lunch-N-Learn Programs are presented four times per year and provide education on a specific elder care topic. Past discussions have included veteransí benefits, adult day care and legal issues for the elderly. Employees and their families are invited to bring their lunch and enjoy this informative hour. A question and answer period is always included.

Promotional surveys also are an integral part of the program. By completing these annual surveys, the senior network specialist is better equipped to meet the changing needs of hospital staff. You may also be the lucky one to win a special occasion basket simply by completing four questions.

In this age where life expectancy has greatly increased, the need for elder care will continue to grow at a rapid pace. The North Broward Hospital District along with the Area Agency on Aging of Broward County are ready to take on this incredible challenge by providing up to date information and referral services. It is extremely rewarding to know that valued staff can function at their highest possible level because elder care intervention is available.
